Tension In Abuja As Police, Shi’ites Renew Clash In Nigeria’s Capital

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites , on Thursday clashed with policemen at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, two days after confronting security operatives in Nigeria’s capital.

Naijaparry learned that the police fired gunshots and tear gas to disperse them as they protested the continuous detention of their leader, Ibrahim el-Zakzaky.

It was learned that the clash on Thursday sparked panic as anxious workers, commuters and motorists fled in fear.

The group had on Tuesday shot three policemen on duty at the National Assembly as the Shi’ites burnt some cars during the protest.

More than 340 members of the group were reportedly killed by the Nigerian army in December, 2015, after the army accused them of blocking a road.

El-Zakzaky has been in detention since his arrest by operatives of the State Security Service in December 2015.

He was arrested following a clash between followers of his group and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army State, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria, Kaduna state.
